AI Search Is Not Google Search
Most small business owners still think "search" means one thing. A user types keywords into Google, and the ten blue links determine who gets found. You invest in SEO, track rankings, and watch your position on the SERP. That effort still matters.
But here is the shift already running under your feet. A growing percentage of your buyers do not open Google at all. They open ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude. They type a question in their own words, not keyword fragments. And the model answers from the sources it trusts, without showing a single blue link.
If your business is invisible to those models, you are invisible to that buyer.
AI answer engines do not rank pages. They decide which sources to trust. If your content is not structured to be cited, you do not exist in the answer.
The model does not browse like a human
A search engine crawls your whole site, indexes every page, and ranks them against a keyword. An AI answer engine does not do that. It reads content its crawlers surfaced, decides whether you are authoritative enough to cite, and incorporates your information into its internal knowledge base. That base is what it answers from. Not your live site.
So the rules change.
- Keywords are not the unit. A model answers questions, not keyword strings. Your content needs to answer the actual questions your customers ask, phrased the way they ask them. "How much does an eyelash extension refill cost in Manila?" beats "eyelash extension pricing" every time.
- Structure matters more than density. A model parsing your page looks for clear hierarchies. A title that says what the page is about. Sections that break down each topic. Plain language that connects the dots. A dense block of marketing copy reads as noise. A well-structured answer reads as a citation.
- Being cited is the new ranking. You do not want to be first on page one. You want the model to quote you by name when it answers a question about your category. That is the visibility metric that matters now, and it is measurable.
What you can do this week
The good news is that most of what makes your business discoverable by AI is the same good practice that makes it usable for humans. The bar is not higher. It is just different.
- Publish a FAQ page that uses real customer language. Not "Frequently Asked Questions," but the actual sentences people type. "Do you deliver to Pasig?" "How long does a session take?" "What happens if I need to reschedule?" Models love this format because it maps questions to answers directly.
- Keep your hours, location, and services in one stable place. A model citing you needs to know those are current. A page that has not been updated since 2022 gets low trust. Your "About" page with a physical address, service area, and contact info is a citation target.
- Write naturally. The marketing voice that sounds crisp to a human ("Elevate your experience with premium solutions") reads as filler to a model. "We serve the Ortigas area and deliver within 24 hours" is what gets cited. Specificity scores.
- Let your site be read. Models do not log in. They scrape public pages. If your critical information is behind a login wall, inside a PDF no crawler fetches, or buried in a JavaScript carousel, the model never sees it.
A score you can move
The hardest part of traditional SEO is the feedback loop. You make a change and wait weeks to see if the rank moves. AI visibility is faster. You can run a scan, see whether Perplexity or ChatGPT actually cites your business for the questions your buyers ask, fix the gaps, and scan again. The number moves.
That is what the Visibility Scanner does. It asks the answer engines the questions your customers actually type, checks whether your business gets cited, and surfaces exactly what needs to change. It turns a vague "are we visible to AI?" into a fixable list.
The businesses that own this shift early will keep being found as buying behavior moves from the search bar to the chat window. The ones that wait will watch their traffic go quiet and not know why.
Now is the time to check whether the AI can actually find you, before the buyer asks and gets a name that is not yours.
